Agroforestry is a land-use system in which the cultivation of agricultural crops or livestock is combined with the production of woody crops, usually trees, on the same plot. But what are the advantages of this? Which trees can you plant and how do you manage them? What is the best way to coordinate the various production elements?
Main research questionThe aim of this project is to enable CO2 compensation through agroforestry projects. This is done at a number of East-Flemish farms and for the benefit of a number of East-Flemish companies and citizens.
Climate neutral enterprises through carbon storage in agroforestry
More knowledge is gained regarding strategies to reduce and adapt to climate change in highly complex land use contexts such as mixed farming (MF) systems (i.e. crops and livestock) and agroforestry (AF) systems (i.e. trees and crops and/or livestock).

Agroforestry with trees rows favorable for soil quality and beneficial bugs. Total biomass yield positive.
A new study on the quantitative effects of 'ally cropping', a form of agroforestry in which rows of trees are planted in the field so that all operations with the normal agricultural machinery are still possible.
Main research questionWith the new project 'AGROFORESTRY 2025' we aim to increase the applicability of agroforestry as a system within the Flemish agricultural sector. The concrete goal is to optimize various facets within the cultivation system.

Main research questionThe FARMLIFE project is conducting field trials on newer on-farm climate adaptation techniques, such as agroforestry, or such as land use interventions in combination with water management and soil conservation. The testing, implementation and demonstration will take place on 3 farms in North Brabant (the Netherlands).
